Was Trump’s Presidency an Instrument of God’s Will? A Biblical Perspective
Throughout history, God has demonstrated His sovereignty by using rulers—both righteous and unrighteous—to accomplish His purposes. The Bible gives us striking examples, such as Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian king whom God calls “My servant” in Jeremiah 25:9 and 27:6. This title wasn’t about Nebuchadnezzar’s holiness; it was about God’s authority to use anyone as an instrument of His divine plan.
Nebuchadnezzar: A Pagan King, Yet God’s Servant
Nebuchadnezzar was ambitious, idolatrous, and power-driven. Yet God granted him dominion over nations to bring judgment on Judah for its rebellion. His conquest of Jerusalem and destruction of the temple were not random acts of war—they were part of God’s larger plan to discipline His people. This shows us a profound truth: God’s sovereignty extends over all rulers, even those who do not acknowledge Him.
Could Trump Fit This Pattern?
Fast forward to modern times. Donald Trump’s presidency was one of the most polarizing in U.S. history. Supporters hailed him as a defender of religious liberty and national strength, while critics saw him as deeply flawed.
But here’s the question: Could God have used Trump, despite his imperfections, to fulfill a divine purpose?
Consider these parallels:
• Unlikely Choice: Nebuchadnezzar and Cyrus were not “ideal” candidates for God’s work, yet they were chosen. Trump, with his unconventional style and controversial past, fits this pattern.
• Instrument of Disruption: Nebuchadnezzar’s rise shifted the spiritual and political landscape of his time. Trump’s presidency undeniably disrupted global politics, cultural norms, and even the church’s posture in society.
• Impact Beyond Intent: Nebuchadnezzar pursued empire-building, not God’s glory, yet fulfilled prophecy. Similarly, Trump may have pursued nationalistic goals, but those actions could align with divine timing for Israel, global alliances, or moral awakening.
The Bigger Picture
Daniel 2:21 reminds us: “He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings.” Whether we view Trump as a hero or a villain, the truth remains—God is in control. He can use any leader, willingly or unwillingly, to advance His purposes. And just as Nebuchadnezzar was later humbled (Daniel 4), every ruler remains accountable to God.
Final Thought
If history teaches us anything, it’s that God’s plans often unfold through unexpected vessels. Trump’s presidency may not have looked like a divine appointment to many, but perhaps, like Nebuchadnezzar, he was a tool in the hands of a sovereign God—shaping nations, stirring hearts, and setting the stage for what comes next.
